Located in the redevelopment of the heritage-listed Byron Butter Factory, the Luna Wine Store transforms a rudimentary commercial space through a series of simple moves.
First the space was stripped back to the essentials, introducing a set of suspended lighting elements and leaving fire services exposed. The sales counter, refrigerated storage, and wine display are then rationalised into a single prefabricated timber bench that runs from the entrance to the back of the shop before terminating with a half-round open end that encourages casual countertop discussion.
A combination of custom wall-hung shelving and off the shelf rack systems tied together with spotted gum plywood is then inserted to address additional storage and display requirements. More plywood sheets then clad the internal wall before shifting to a perforated pattern behind the counter, creating a ventilated storage and staff area. Custom steel frame furniture allows for a flexible seating and display zone at the shop front where weekly tasting events transform the space. A minimal palette of locally sourced spotted gum, steel elements, and brass reflects the character of the natural, sustainable, and minimal intervention wines on display.
